Mooroopna Park Primary School | Food Program | Shepparton Photographer
In this world we truly have some unsung heroes. Mooroopna Park Primary School are blessed with a Principal that just goes above and beyond for his students. Off his own bat, with no assistance or acknowledgement from the Education Department, Mr B has created something we as a Community need to know about.
I was blessed to spend 5hrs in the school earlier this week documenting a standard day and whilst I had a fairly good understanding on how the program worked I was still totally in awe and amazed watching the day unfold.
Let me give you a little run through, how I saw it.
I arrived at 8am. The kitchen and eating area I entered was so impressive. It was bright, warm, inviting and it has a staff that greets you with warm smiles and a big welcome. A fully qualified Chef is employed, Tanya, whom is so passionate and a lot of fun. She has a team to help run the kitchen, Leslie and Jai. The students do also get to help out and you can see they genuinely enjoy their time in the kitchen helping. Mr B is also hands on and can be found sitting and eating with the students, and again you can see that the children love it.
Mooroopna Bakery deliver a tray of bread and rolls every single day for free! Plunkett Orchards donate 700 pieces of fruit a week. The food bank provide many of the remaining essentials. This is amazing and no one would even probably know what these generous Businesses do on a daily basis. The school do pay for still quite a bit though including meat and grocery items. How amazing would it be to get a Butcher on board as the next step!?
From 8am the students come in to enjoy breakfast. They have so much to choose from and each day the menu changes. Wednesday they had, Hot Chocolate, Pancakes, Toast, two different cereals, yoghurt, milk and fruit.
At 10.40 students on the roster, come and collect the trollies that are loaded and ready to go. The students take these trollies to each classroom and deliver two platters to each room. One platter is a fruit platter, the other has cream cheese, cucumber, carrot, cheese, crackers and cherry tomatoes. The children are allowed to eat these during class.
The kitchen is like a well oiled machine and it doesn’t miss a beat. By 12.10pm the first of the three lunch services start. The teachers bring their classes over and they enter the dining area. At the door they collect a piece of bread roll and then head to their seat where a delicious bowl of Risotto awaits them. They are then offered parmesan cheese which the teachers do for the students with their hands up. Once they have finished, they scrape any leftovers into the buckets at the end of the tables and place their bowls in a crate and the cutlery into a tub of water. At the door they are free to help themselves to a muesli bar that they can take out with me.
In the afternoon another round of fruit is delivered to the classrooms.
Food is such an important part of everything we do. Since the program was introduced, attendance has improved, the students behaviour and concentration has also shown positive improvements.
Next week the Lighthouse Foundation is having a fundraiser and I cant wait to attend with our group of friends. There will be auctions and raffles through out the day. I have donated some family vouchers to be auctioned so be sure to put your hand up and bid on them!! Everything raised is going to the School and of course it’s for the kids, so remember that and dig deep.
